Lecture 17 Jan 2017

1 FEB 2016  LECTURE
On Monday evening, 1 Feb 2016, at 8pm in our Shool Hall, after an introduction by Rabbi Levy, Rabbi Aubrey Hersh gave us our first Lecture of this year’s series, on the subject of ”False Messiahs’.  He brought the time of the 17th Century, and especially the Life of Sabbatai Zevi, to life, putting it into the context of our present Galus, as well as relating it to issues that we still have around us today.
We had a good audience who braved a night of severe local Gales to attend, and they gave an excellent response to a good and interesting Speaker. Our Chairman thanked him for how he had presented it.
We held a Raffle for a table of prizes, and rounded it off with a lovely spread of Tea, Coffee and cakes provided by our Ladies Guild.

By day, Ashley Blaker is a comedy Writer and Producer for Radio and TV. As a radio producer, he was responsible for first unleashing the comedy phenomenon ”Little Britain” on the Nation. and has worked with a Who’s Who of TV comedy. His recent show, ”The Matt Lucas Awards”, had 2 series and a Special on BBC One and his new series, ”Pompidou”, is currently on BBC Two. He also presently has no fewer than 4 series on BBC Radio 4.

He was consulting Producer for TV Series ”La La Land” and ”Rock Profile”, & Producer for Blur (2001), U2 (2001), Steps (2000), George Michael and Geri Halliwell (2000), Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey (2000) ..He was Writer for Hoarder (2015). The Date (2015), The Bowl (2015). and Hunger (2015)

Ashley Blaker performs regularly, giving a hilarious account of how he has ended up in the comedy business, what it’s like working with famous comedians, and how it’s possible to work in a very secular environment and still hold on to your Yiddishkeit and values.

He also himself performs routines about many aspects of Judaism that have audiences crying with laughter, whether traditional United Synagogue or Stamford Hill Chassidim.

We thank the Chief Rabbi’s Centre for Rabbinical Excellence for their help and support for our Lecture Program

Melvyn Hartog Lecture ..” ‘Talking  About Death Won’t Kill You’,

on Tuesday 10 March at 8pm

We are happy to announce that we have arranged the second Lecture in our Series. It will be given by Melvyn Hartog, who has been Head of Burial for the United Synagogue since January 2001.

The Lecture is titled ..” ‘Talking  About Death Won’t Kill You’, and will take place on Tuesday 10 March at 8pm in Palmers Green Shool Hall.

His theme is to bring out ‘the light -hearted, beautiful and dignified side’ of his work. He is a Family man, who works hard at an important Communal need, but always with a care for the emotional involvement that is an inevitable part of it.

He has developed an Israel Burial Plan for those who desire that facility. In a different Field, he is also Prison Chaplain for Wormwood Scrubs, stretching out a hand to those who end up there.

As you can see…his experience is wide…and his approach is distinctly light.

At the end of his Lecture he is ready to take a question and answer session.

FROM the Chairman [Pre AGM Monday 12 May 2014]

We are looking forward to the coming AGM, in our Synagogue Hall,  on Monday 12th May at 8pm, as an opportunity to meet as many of our Members as possible, and to give an opportunity to hear any suggestions on how we, together, can add strength to the Community that we all hold so dear.

Our Community has built a reputation for being warm, welcoming and caring over very many years, and it is surprising how often Guests make such remarks.

We have something that we can be proud of, and which is worth our efforts, together, to continue.  Let us work together to continue it.

We ask any Member who can help us us strengthen our Community to come forward on a Nomination Form, and add their ideas to our work for this Community in the coming Year.

Remember…the VERY LAST Date to have a Valid Nomination, properly signed, & in the hands of our Administrator is Friday 26 April 2014.

Dont delay…do it NOW!!

THE AGM OF MONDAY 12 MAY 2014

Our Community held its AGM in the Shool Hall on Monday 12th May 2014 at 8pm, and the attendance compared very favorably with the Past. The questions and comments made from the Floor during the evening, showed that our Community is still interested and their support is still with us.

At the end of what Members indicated was a satisfying evening, I was able to announce the Results of the Elections.  We now have………..

3 Honarary Officers, namely a Chairman, Financial Representative, and a Warden.

We also have ………

5 male Members of the Board of Management, and 4 Lady Members.

In addition we will have……………

a Representative at the US Council, and also a Representative at the Board of Deputies.

I am proud for our Community that we have had such a response to its need for Leadership, and very grateful to those who have come forward offering to give their time and energy to providing it.

I look to the presence and support of all our Members in sharing in all our Services and Events, and so helping our Community continue into a warm and satisfying Future.

Together we have built it.

Together we are proud of it.

Let us work together to continue it!!
